Group Show
Ellen Barrett - Carol Hodder - David Jenkins
Jeanienne McCarthy - Bridget Ryan

The group exhibition currently at the Lavit Gallery, features five artists who all work in very different ways, but are linked by the fact that they all take their inspiration from the landscape.

Carol Hodder's paintings, although predominantly abstract, make use of a muted earthy palette, and a richly layered surface which immediately brings landscape to mind.

The paintings of David Jenkins are more representational in comparison, with the Donegal landscape featuring strongly, as can clearly be seen in the painting Boglands, where the richly textured treatment of the land contrasts with the empty sky.

Evidence of man's mark on the land can be seen in the paintings of Bridget Ryan who focuses on old abandoned houses in the landscape. These paintings almost have a naïve feeling about them, with the blue/green of land and sky dominating, and the weathered red buildings seeming like they are being enveloped by the harsh landscape.

Ellen Barrett's mixed media works on paper are an exciting mix of collage, print and gestural marks made in response to the sea. All of the pieces in this series feature the upright form of a lighthouse, which seems to emphasise the activity of the sea.

The coast is also what inspires the paintings of Jeanienne McCarthy. Bright blocks of fresh, joyful colour dominate in these works, while the shapes are suggestive of boundary lines, horizons and landmarks.

All of the artists in this exhibition are based in Cork with the exception of Bridget Ryan, who lives in Galway. Ellen Barrett, David Jenkins and Jeanienne McCarthy have all graduated from The Crawford College of Art and Design within the last five years
